Sopron University is located in the city of Sopron, a picturesque town in the northwestern Hungary. It is situated 220 km from Budapest, 60 km from Vienna and 90 km from Bratislava – the Hungarian, the Austrian and the Slovakian capitals. Founded in 1735, Sopron University has its origins in the establishment of an academic institution in the town of Sopron. The university, initially focused on specific academic disciplines, has evolved over the years to become a comprehensive institution.
In 1871, it gained the official status of a university, known as the Sopron Royal Academy of Mining and Forestry. Over the subsequent decades, the institution expanded its scope to cover a broader range of fields, adapting to the changing needs of society.
The university played a significant role in the region until its temporary closure in 1921. Following a brief hiatus, the institution was re-established in 1952 as the University of Forestry and Wood Sciences, emphasizing its commitment to forestry education.
Today, the Sopron University continues to thrive as a modern institution, offering a diverse range of academic programs. It is recognized for its contributions to forestry, environmental sciences, engineering, and related disciplines.
