Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) traces its origins back to 1635 when Cardinal Péter Pázmány established a Catholic university in Nagyszombat (now Trnava, Slovakia), focused on Theology and Philosophy. In 1770-1780, the university relocated to Buda and later to Pest, evolving with the support of Maria Theresa, the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, into the Royal Hungarian University.
Over the ensuing decades, ELTE expanded its faculties to meet the evolving needs of an enlightened society. By the latter half of the 19th century, it emerged as a modern center of higher education, covering a wide array of scholarly disciplines.
In 1950, the university underwent reorganization and assumed its current name, paying homage to Loránd Eötvös, a renowned physicist who had been one of its professors.
In recent times, ELTE has constructed a new campus on the picturesque banks of the Danube in Budapest, known as Lágymányos Campus. This campus houses three faculties: Faculty of Informatics, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Social Sciences.
Presently, ELTE comprises nine faculties, spanning Economics, Education and Psychology, Humanities, Informatics, Law, Primary and Pre-School Education, Science, Social Sciences, and the Bárczi Gusztáv Faculty of Special Needs Education.
Internationally recognized, ELTE’s programs are accredited by the Hungarian Accreditation Board. The university’s diplomas are globally acknowledged, and course credits are transferable across all European Union countries.
Throughout its century-long history, ELTE has produced numerous world-renowned scientists, boasting four Nobel Prize laureates among its faculty and alumni. With an annual enrollment of 33,000 students, supported by a highly qualified academic staff of 1,800 teachers and researchers, Eötvös Loránd University continues to be a beacon of academic excellence.
