Programme Introduction

Why is the MA in International relations a good choice?

The Institute of History offers a four-semester master degree programme in International Relations with a focus on the relationship between global, regional and national ideas and policies of the world. The Programme discusses the fundamental theoretical and practical issues in international politics and diplomacy, it provides students with in-depth, contextual and interdisciplinary knowledge of these issues. 

The International Relations MA program consists five blocks of knowledge: introductory subjects (64 credits), professional core material (72 credits), specialisation (30 credits), thesis, professional practice (14 credits), optional subjects (6 credits). What will you learn?

You will study subjects necessary for international relations, such as international politics, diplomatic history, government policies, social history, international finance, civilisation studies and EU studies. Throughout the course, there is a strong emphasis on deepening your knowledge of the history of international relations.

Specialisations

Two academic specializations are available in English from the 3rd semester:

  • Transitology (if you are interested in studying about the political, economic and social transitions /regime changes/ happened in South Europe, in Latin-America, or in Central and Eastern Europe).
  • European Studies: an academic specialization for the students who are interested in the historical and contemporary social, economic and cultural processes of Europe.

What can you do with this qualification?

You will be able to work for ministries, government departments and public institutions in international and EU affairs, write proposals and manage projects for the EU and other international organisations. You will be able to prepare expert papers and develop strategies on political, social, economic, minority issues, etc. Last but not least, you will also be equipped with the social science literacy and knowledge of today’s world.

  • B2 level English language certificate

Proof of language proficiency: Language exam certificate (EILC, TOEFL or any other internationally acclaimed certificate) or equivalent official document proving that the applicant has an intermediate level of knowledge of English (issued by a school or university etc.), its official translation

    Admission interview

The admission procedure consists of the following parts:

  • online interview
  • evaluation of application documents

Online interview: The international office will contact all applicants to set up a suitable time for the online interview. Applicants will be interviewed by appointed staff members from the host department and the international office. Professors will check the applicant’s preliminary knowledge of the chosen study area and motivation. The international office will check the language skills and intercultural competences of the applicant.

The admission decision is based on the following results:

  • result of previous studies (max. 20 points)
  • CV, motivation letter (max. 20 points)
  • online interview (max. 60 points)

Minimum admission requirements: 60 points. (Those applicants who gain less than 5 points in any section of the admission procedure will be rejected
