Programme Introduction

Why is the Geogrpahy MSc a good choice?

If you could not decide whether natural science or social science is matches your future career, then we have the perfect option for you. If you are uncertain whether you want to have a more complex understanding of local processes or you are more interested in global changes, do not hesitate. Our Geographer MSc, training covers both areas, and provides specialized knowledge to help you learn as thoroughly as possible about the complex relationship of the human society and the environment. The Institute of Geography and Environmental Sciences of Eszterházy Károly Catholic University in Eger provides you the most up-to-date knowledge and skills. The aim is to train such geographers, who can understand the geographical processes, and can characterize natural, environmental and social phenomena. We provide practical knowledge to our students by working with geographic information systems, statistical tools, qualitative assessment and survey methods. During their studies our geographer students have the chance to work as experts in their field, both independently and as members of multi-professional teams. Once they finished their studies, our students are prepared to meet the expectations of the 21st century by presenting their knowledge and skills.

What will you learn?

You can deepen your understanding of the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, soils and rocks, the living world, and even society and the economy, from two new perspectives: as a resource and as a risk carrier. In both courses, you will gain many practical hours of hands-on experience in the independent use of common geospatial software (ArcGIS, AutoCAD, QGIS, etc.). You will also learn how and to what extent the environmental, social and economic objectives of sustainable development are reflected in national and European spatial development legislation and policies. At the end of the course, a work placement of at least 6 weeks will help you to acquire and strengthen the social competences necessary for post-graduate employment.

Specialisations:

  • Risk and resource analyst
  • Regional manager

Obligatory to choose one of them from the 2nd semester

What can you do with this qualification?

We train geographers with a degree in geography who are prepared to understand the geographic laws of fundamental natural, environmental, technical and social phenomena, to develop and apply original professional solutions based on these laws, to present the results and to communicate them to experts and users. Based on the alumni interviews conducted, our graduates with a Master’s degree in geography typically find four types of jobs. (1) Government agencies and municipalities require graduates with multi-disciplinary expertise, initially in a salaried position. (2) Graduates can work with autonomous responsibility in both the public and private sectors, initially as project managers or assistants. (3) With a knowledge of geoinformatics, they may find employment as key implementation staff, especially in companies. (4) Some graduates with a strong geography background may also find their way into universities and research institutes, which is a practical prerequisite for early entry into doctoral studies.
