Programme Introduction

The Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology Engineering programme offers the opportunity for students to study viticulture and winemaking, including their technological background as well as vine types in Hungary and around the world. Students will also take courses in natural sciences essential for grape growing and winemaking such as grapevine biology, chemistry, geology, soil sciences, microbiology etc. Knowledge about the economical background of running a winery and wine marketing are also part of the programme.

An important milestone in the development of the viticulturist-winemaker training at Eszterházy Károly Catholic University was the establishment of cooperation with our partners in France. Within this framework, the details of the “double-degree” between Bordeaux Sciences Agro (École Nationale Supérieure des Sciences Agronomiques de Bordeaux-Aquitaine) and the Eszterházy Károly Catholic University were developed.

The agreement will allow students (except Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship holders) to join the basic viticulture and oenology course at the French university for two semesters, and French students to study at the Eszterházy Károly Catholic University, also for two semesters. As a result of this process, students will be able to obtain diplomas from both Eszterházy Károly Catholic University and Bordeaux Sciences Agro.

What will you learn?

You can learn about the processes and technology of grape and wine production, the domestic and world varieties. You will learn the basics of the biology and ecological needs of grapes, variety breeding, oenological chemistry and microbiology. You will also learn about the viticultural aspects of entomology, plant pathology, agro-meteorology, soil science and the basics of vine plant protection. You will gain knowledge of the science, engineering and economics of viticulture and winemaking, as well as the basics of wine marketing.

Why is the BSc in Viticulture and oenology engineering a good choice?

Today, wine is once again rising to a more prominent position in gastronomy, thanks in part to young, innovative winemakers. As a winemaker-engineer, you will be part of a natural creative process that will allow you to offer culinary value to your fellow human beings. Be open-minded, become a winemaker, experiment with flavours and vintages, and you too can contribute to a body of knowledge that goes back thousands of years.

What can you do with this qualification?

You will be able to organise and manage viticultural and oenological work in wineries and vineyards, to set up and run independent wine farms, and to prepare and market wine products. You will be involved in research, development and innovation activities.
